Not counting my "Best of 2009" posted on January 4, there has not been a regular Music Library entry for exactly 90 days. This is not the longest gap, as 105 days passed in between entries during the summer of 2007, when I compiled my '500' series. Nine artists appear for the first time, among a total of 96 tracks, and six entries to start 2010, the most ever for the first outing of any year. There are also four debuts on the Top 200 Artist chart, also an all-time high... Lisa Gerrard steps out in front of all others, with 10 tracks from her third solo outing, "The Black Opal," quietly released last October. The album includes collaborations with Michael Edwards, Patrick Cassidy, Pieter Bourke and James Orr. It was the first release issued on Gerrard Records. Gerrard's increased point total catapults her to No. 65 on the Top Artist chart, surpassing her former band Dead Can Dance, who drop to No. 66. Speaking of the previously mentioned Pieter Bourke, his now defunct band Soma returns after a 10-year hiatus with "The Winged Measurer," a track included on the EP "My Ancient Vihmaana," released in 2001... In November 2009, Moby released an expanded edition of his "Wait For Me" album that contained a separate disc of ambient versions of the original tracks. The four Moby songs that are featured on my latest additions are from that disc. Showing up with six "lost" tracks is Enigma, whose 3-CD set "The Platinum Collection," contains the third disc of mostly instrumental outtakes that are actually quite good. Michael Cretu's project becomes the 22nd artist to reach 1,000 points. In fact, Enigma hit that mark exactly... It is interesting to note that starting with the Pet Shop Boys at No. 5, every artist ranked below them, through No. 11 Peter Gabriel, all saw gains in their point totals. This brings me to the point where I need to discuss two artists, Delerium and Peter Gabriel. The majority of Delerium fans that have heard "Dust In Gravity" (ML #590), have accused them of selling out. I have tried very hard to like this single, with vocals by Kreesha Turner, but as of now, I tend to agree with the majority of fans. If you are a true fan, you will be at least shocked, if not extremely disappointed that the pure "top 40 mainstream pop" sound, is anything but a way for Delerium to reach the radio-friendly, "cookie-cutter" format... Now, Peter Gabriel's "Scratch My Back," is the English musician's 14th album, and by far, his least accessible. The idea behind "Scratch My Back" was an exchange where each artist would cover one of Gabriel's songs in return for his covering one of theirs. The other artists' renditions of Gabriel's songs will appear on a later album titled "I'll Scratch Yours." Gabriel just uses his voice, using orchestra, rather than conventional rock instruments... French actress and electronic pop singer Charlotte Gainsbourg lands five tracks from her third studio album, "IRM." All songs were written and produced by Beck. The album's title was inspired by the sound of an MRI Scanner. Her increased point total was enough to place her at No. 198 on the artist list. Four Tet, aka Kieran Hebden, just released his 7th album, "There Is Love In You," with "Love Cry" as the first single. Four Tet is the second of four artists to debut, coming in at No. 170. Side Liner, the musical project of Greek musician Nick Miamis, lands two more tracks from "Missing Pieces Of A Puzzle," enough for him to debut at No. 190. It only took a few short months for Owl City to rack up enough points to enter at No. 200. Owl City scored the No. 14 track of 2009 with "Fireflies." Four artists dropped off the list, including Jon Anderson, Claudia Brucken, Sia and Tracey Thorn. The Everything But The Girl singer will most likely reenter this summer when she releases her next solo album... A brief summary of the artists that are making their first appearance on my Music Library includes Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins). Her single "Moses" is dedicated to Jake Drake-Brockman, a close personal friend of hers. Beware, if you are a Cocteau Twins fan, this track will make you race for your CD collection and quickly start playing "Heaven Or Las Vegas" as quickly as possible. Not for all tastes. Robyn Hitchcock sneaks in with "Winter Love," and it wasn't until later did I realize the song is 26 years old! It is almost unheard of for "oldies" to make it on my Music Library. Other "new" artists include Animal Collective, Monolake, Warp Technique, Salem, Cell and Slow Six... The 9th artist to earn Freshman status is 55-year old Bill Mumy. For those near my age, he is best remembered for playing Will Robinson in the 60's sci-fi TV show, "Lost In Space." Some may not know that Mumy is an accomplished musician, who plays guitar, bass, keyboards, banjo, mandolin, harmonica and percussion. Actually in 1980, he teamed with Robert Haimer to record the novelty song "Fish Heads," under the Barnes & Barnes moniker. His first all-instrumental album, "Speechless," released in 2009, yields two tracks... For the complete list of all my latest entries, go back to the top of this page. Stay warm... |
