ML #529 - #533 Summary

16 new artists, along with 26 established acts, join my Music Library this June, bringing a total of 19 entries so far in 2008. Led by Coldplay's 12 tracks from their latest album, 85 new tracks are put in the record books, bringing the ML number up to #533, and 527 tracks away from the 10,000 mark... "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends" (usually called "Viva la Vida") is the fourth studio album by Coldplay. The project was largely produced by Brian Eno. Coldplay have released two singles from the record, "Violet Hill" and "Viva la Vida". Viva la Vida (Spanish for Live Life) takes its name from a painting by Frida Kahlo, the acclaimed 20th century Mexican artist. Coldplay take the biggest leap on the Top 200 artist list to No. 101. Blank & Jones have returned to their dance roots with "The Logic Of Pleasure," placing 10 tracks, including "Miracle Cure," (ML #529) which features New Order's Bernard Sumner on vocals...   "Letter From Egypt" is Aha's Morton Harket's latest album, his first since 1996, and his second sung in English. Two singles have already been released, "Movies," (ML #516) and "Darkspace" (ML #529). Madonna returns with four tracks from her "Hard Candy" album, her last studio album to be released under her contract with Warner Bros. The album has already debuted at number one in twenty-seven countries. My issue with this album and some of the tracks from the latest Blank & Jones, is the overmodulated and overdriven production. Maybe I'm showing my age, but why do people want to listen to distortion in the bass...   With 16 new artists to talk about, I'll need to make it brief for each. Alanis Morissette is a well-established act, but she appears for the first time on my Music Library with a couple of tracks from "Flavors of Entanglement," her seventh studio album, which she co-produced with Guy Sigsworth. Another veteran, John Hiatt finally makes it on, with "Let's Give This Love a Try," from his 18th studio album, "Same Old Man." Patrick O'Hearn guests on bass on the album. Joan Wasser is a violinist and singer/songwriter in the indie rock world. She uses the moniker Joan As Police Woman. "To Survive" is her just released second album. David Sylvian appears on the track "Honor Wishes" (ML #532). Sylvian also lends his vocals on "Ballad Of A Deadman" by Steve Jansen, which leads off ML #532...   California-based indie rockers Division Day covers Roxy Music's "More Than This" on ML #530. This is the third cover so far on my Music Library for this track. 10,000 Maniacs' version (ML #332), preceded Emmie, who showed up 100 entries later with her version. Swayzak is an organic house UK band that consists of James S. Taylor and David Brown. "Smile and Receive" is taken from their fifth studio album, "Some Other Country," released last year. Thrice is an American band from Irvine, California. The group was founded in 1998 by guitarist/vocalist Dustin Kensrue and guitarist Teppei Teranishi while they were in high school. "The Alchemy Index" is Thrice's fifth studio recording, a four-disc concept album that was split between two releases, the first in October 2007 and the second in April 2008. The band originally planned to release four discs at once, each disc with six tracks representing one of the four elements: Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. No-Man is a British duo formed in 1987 as No Man Is An Island (Except The Isle Of Man) by Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson (also of Porcupine Tree). Three tracks from their sixth studio album appear on my latest entries. Celtic Woman is a musical ensemble comprising six Irish female artists: vocalists Chloë Agnew, Órla Fallon, Lynn Hilary, Lisa Kelly, Alex Sharpe and fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt. The group's repertoire ranges from traditional Celtic tunes to modern songs. The lone track represented on ML #532 was originally recorded by Clannad... Ulrich Schnauss may not have added to his point total, but he does appear on six tracks, by six new artists, as producer and re-mixer. The High Violets are an American dream pop band from Portland, Oregon. "Chinese Letter" came out two years ago. Howling Bells formed in Sydney, Australia late 2004. They soon after packed up and moved to the UK where they recorded their debut record with (Coldplay Producer) Ken Nelson. It was then released September, 2005 on Bella Union to much critical acclaim. "Setting Sun" gets the Schnauss trademark sound, also released in 2006. Mahogany is an electric music ensemble currently working in Brooklyn, New York. A unique combination of vocals, cello, massed guitars, sequencers, synthesizers, percussion, and other instruments make for Mahogany's massive, celestial sound. "Supervitesse (Ulrich Schnauss Remix)" appears on ML #532. Rounding out that entry is Katharina Franck's "Faithful Friend." Franke is a German singer who became famous with her band Rainbirds and has produced several solo albums. Mr. Schnauss also remixes "Remembrance" by Dragons, that was part of an EP by the band called "Lonely Tonight." The final remix from Ulrich Schnauss can be found on the track "Strawberries" by Asobi Seksu, (colloquial Japanese for "playful sex") a rock band based in New York City. Their sound was said to draw influence from the shoegazing genre, which was coined to describe the textured and effects-heavy sound of certain alternative rock in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Port-Royal makes their first appearance with "Stimmung." They are a Genoa, Italy-based post-rock band started in the year 2000 by Attilio Bruzzone (Guitar, Keyboards) and Ettore Di Roberto (Piano, Keyboards). They would soon be joined by Ettore's brother Michele Di Roberto (Drums), Emilio Pozzolini (Keyboards, Sampling), and Giulio Corona (Bass). They are known to have a unique approach to their music, with an emphasis on instrumentals over lyrics; a style resembling Mogwai and M83...   One final quick note..Curt Smith's "Who You Are" (ML #533) is a reworking of the same track that appeared on the last album by Tears For Fears, "Everybody Loves A Happy Ending."
